The second and last part of samplers from Len Faki’s ‘Berghain 03’ mix features two previously unreleased tracks by Edit-Select and Len Faki himself.

Edit-Select starts off with a seething and haunting atmospheric track on the A-side, where the focus remains on small changes in the background. Heavy filtered white noise that steams up from everywhere fills the tracks steady beat with a sense of progression and elevation. Being so blatant in it’s DJ tool sense, the track is really something special and Edit-Select pushes it in and out through the locked groove sense that it’s made of.

As for the B-side, Len Faki transforms his signature sound into something different and fresh. A dub vibe combined with a more technoid groove, very much a like the Radio Slave track ‘Neverending…..’, he pursues a sense of timelessness and a mesmerising feeling throughout the entire length of the track. Of course it features Faki’s well known siren, but it’s placed in such manner that it doesn’t get too much attention from the groove, it just blends into the heavy break and disappears just as fast as it arrived.

Playing this in the right environment and to the right crowd, it’s a winner.

Being one of the most underrated mix series of today, Ostgut Ton flexes it’s well trained muscles from the dancefloor onto the compact disc. The undescribable momentums of the Berghain are showcased in this clever and unmistakeable way for everyone who want’s to get a taste of the music without visiting Berlin – and for us who enjoy the music on demand.

The previous installments from André Galluzzi and Marcel Dettmann differs a lot from Len Faki’s take. Leaving the purist techno and house for that special go-crazy-with-lots-of-fun-party-tactics-sound is a clever move. Ostgut Ton needs to remain somewhat magical – which means breaking away from repetative patterns (even good ones unfortunately). They also have a great DJ who in the right moment will lift you up from the ground just to throw you down again (Len Faki – Odyssee II at 10:00 on the Sunday morning at Berghain is the perfect reference).

The thing about this mix is that when you’re in the right mood, it’s one of the nicest things you’ve heard in ages. It brings you into a mood that really makes you want to dance. But, in regards to the previous Berghain-mixes, this one is a bit off when it comes to longetivity. It has a nice tracklist with exclusive tracks and zero fault on the transitions – but there’s just something missing.

As the attitude of the mix isn’t persistant, a feeling of timelessness gets lost which makes the mix a bit uninspiring. Giving it a listen at your house party or at the right moment – just as seeing Len Faki live in real life – it might just as well be a really great moment, but it also has the downside of bringing things into clarity and so the magical feeling is lost. Really tricky mix this one.

The CD is due very soon.
